1/5/07: The Utah War

By Doug Fabrizio

Salt Lake City, UT – In the spring of 1857, President James Buchanan appointed a non-Mormon governor for the Utah Territory and sent troops to enforce the order. Armed skirmishes between the Mormon militia and the U.S. Army followed, and the roughly year-long conflict is now known as the "Utah War." The Utah Historical Society is commemorating the sesquicentennial throughout the year. Friday, we're rebroadcasting Doug's conversation with independent historians Will Bagley and David Bigler as well as LDS Church Historian Richard Turley on this pivotal moment in Utah history.

  • To enquire about upcoming Utah Historical Society events, call (801) 533-3501 or visit them on-line
  • The sesquicentennial committee is creating a web-site which will be available after January 6th at UtahWar.org
