Join us for the opening of five new exhibitions on May 19 from 7 to 9 p.m.! STREET GALLERY: Michael Ryan Handley | Sublimation Equal parts alchemy, science experiment, and process-based art making, Sublimation explores the generative power of moisture and the lack thereof in areas experiencing prolonged drought as evidenced by the color and feel of the soil and vegetation in those locations. CODEC GALLERY: Willow Skye-Biggs | Tastes Like Mandy Tastes Like Mandy is a visceral experience that combines queer cues with assembled audio recordings that simulate the abstract sounds of entering into or exiting from an organism, human or otherwise. A-I-R SPACE: Kelly O'Neill | rend/er Kelly O'Neill's rend/er presents 3D prints and CG photographic scenes constructed from photo documentation collected on the site of Nancy Holt's seminal 1976 work titled "Sun Tunnels," and presses the audience to contemplate their digital experience and the models on which our contemporary understanding of space teeter. PROJECTS GALLERY: 2017 Gala Art Auction Each year, UMOCA is overwhelmed by the generosity of the art community. As a part of our annual gala—the Museum’s largest fundraiser of the year—local, national, and international artists donate their precious time and talents in the form of incredible art to the Gala Art Auction. ED. SPACE: Céline Downen | Beehive Works Downen and her University of Utah students brought the workshop “Beehive Works” to the Glendale Library and facilitated four weeks of art workshops geared towards all ages. Downen brings to UMOCA the end result: a collaboration of colors, patterns, thoughts, and conversations where participants made not only the objects you’ll see in the exhibit but also new human connections. A cash bar and light refreshments will be available.
